| Waterton
- Glacier International Peace Park is a truely unique
place to visit. Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada
and Glacier National Park in the US are managed together
as one environment with true co-operation between nations.
It was the first such Peace Park in the world. Waterton
Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, an International Peace Park
and a Biosphere Reserve. It is the
only place on earth to have all three designations.
Waterton National Park is a rich wildlife habitat. Visitors
to the park regularly get a chance to see black and
grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Deer roam the
streets of Waterton Village and the Elk are never far
away. Dedicated wildlife spotters might also catch a
glimpse of moose or beaver in the evening.
During the summer months you can enjoy the blooms from
the local flowers. Waterton's flora is created by the
prevailing winds which shapes trees and cross pollinates
prairie and mountain flowers.
The scenic drive along Red Rock pathway brings you to
Red Rock canyon where the striking red bedrock has been
worn away by the mountain streams. A short paved trail
leads you to the spectacular Blakiston Falls.
There
are hiking trails for all levels of ability in the immediate
area from short paved strolls to full day adventures
with significant elevation gain. Most visitors can easily
tackle the short but steep hike up to Bears
Hump which rewards you with panoramic views
over the townsite and lake. More serious hikers pack
a lunch and take the special
boat service to the landing for the Crypt
Lake hike. Rated as one of the best hikes in
Canada you will climb 700m and encounter a rock tunnel
and a narrow ledge (with safety cable).
With a variety of gift stores, ice cream parlours, restaurants
and cafes there is plenty to do for the whole family,
there is even a small movie theatre for rainy days.
